HELP!!!
My main (Win2K) machine started the disk-click-of-death.
I quickly ran out and bought a brand new computer with a 3 year complete
hardware warantee. I will never build another computer again.
The BAD news, the new computer has XP Home on it!!! SHIT.
I'm trying to copy everything off of my old computer and make the new
one visible to the other 2 computers on the network. I can't figure out
how to make XP allow other computers (Especially Win2K computers) to
access it.
I've opened up EVERYTING. Turned off the firewall. Set the root of the
C: drive to share with everybody but when I try to connect from my other
computers (One Win2K the other WinXP Pro) I get the stupid log on window
on the XP Pro and no matter what I try, I can't get onto the new XP
machine.
Any ideas?

When the logon screen pops up makes the username
Machinename\administrator
Password
What ever the administrator password is on the xp machine
Machinename above is the name of the xp machine
Or from the cmd prompt
Again is the admin password is letmein on the new machine and the new
machine is called xphome
Net use * \\xphome\c$ letmein /user:xphome\administrator

You might also need/want to turn off simple file sharing ... which is on the
explorer>tools>folder options

Hi chet,
Window XP home does not have networking. You will need to install
window XP Pro on the new computer to network it with the other two
computers.

I seem to recall that XP home was intentionally crippled so as to not
allow networking. (Or was that it just can't join a PDC.
I'd say putting W2K Pro on the box is a better idea. That's what I'd do.
And then I'd lock that thing down tighter than, well, having a bunch of
17 year old girls in the house tonight for a sleepover, I'll spare the
rest of that line, but you know what I'm thinking.

Thanks for the information. To tell the truth, I've never used XP home;
because, I got the impression early on that it wouldn't network. I just
assumed it didn't have the software built-in to network, kind of like
the old one-to-a-customer MS Dos OS.

Hi Chris,
I've never used XP home, and I'm using XP Pro less and less, as I'm
moving away from windows. Using Linux gives me a much greater sense of
having power, stability, and worry free computing comfort. It's gotten
to the point where I dread booting into Windows XP Pro, because its so
big, slow, and is such a struggle to get things network and keep
everything running smoothly. Also, I find I'm under much more stress
when running windows; because, I so gun shy waiting for something to
misfire.
After using Linux to the point where you have become comfortable with
it, you will better understand what I'm trying to say.

Not on a domain. I was able to see the XP machine from my Win2k machine
(that's still running -- for now) and copy what I needed over to the new
machine.
Now XP won't share my printer with my other XP computer.
