If you think about a OS, its purpose is to provide a framework to access

features of a computer such as disk, keyboard, screen, printers, io ports

with public hooks that everyone can connect to. So one company could write a

word processor, spread sheet, another a database such as vfp that could be

compiled to run on multiple os's. I'm one of those folks that Bill Gates

hijacked his original DOS from the public domain.
