SAMBA 4 emulates Active Directory, though I don't know how well.

I was able to get ClearOS (built on CentOS specifically to be a

domain controller, using SAMBA 3) for free as in beer. ClearOS offers

a SAMBA 4 AD option, but it's not free, and it requires an ongoing

subscription.

Possibly a real Linux wiz could roll their own implementation that

could be relatively easily managed by a non-wiz network admin. That's

beyond my abilities at the moment, and is likely to remain so because

I have very little time to spend learning new stuff, unfortunately.

I will wait as long as I can to see if MS puts those registry hacks

back in. As of today I can still get machines with Win 7 Ultimate SP1 32 bit.

If the NT domain is truly dead and unresurrectable, I will probably

go with ClearOS SAMBA 4. TCO for a Linux domain, even with a

subscription, is likely to still be cheaper than that for a Windows

Server environment.
