At least the Republican candidates have said the same thing. The "No student

left behind" bill has turned into a huge boondoggle and the money went to

keep incompetent teachers on the staffs of the poor schools that were

getting the handouts.

Another boondoggle is the GI education bill. On Frontline last week there

was a sequence about the waste and corruption going on with the GI bill that

pays for soldiers to go back for college degrees when their service is up.

The "for profit" schools have sprung up like mushrooms in the forest and use

every high pressure technique to sign up soldiers. They even go into

hospital wards to sign up those with catastrophic head wounds from road

side bombs. They also take anyone and everyone whether or not they are

capable of understanding college level material. All the soldiers

interviewed by Frontline were heavily into debt (as high as $80,000 for a

four year program) because they had to move their families or take

apartments near the schools to avoid long commutes plus cover other expenses

not covered by the GI bill.

On top of that these schools are not accredited and course credits are not

accepted by other colleges if the soldier wants to transfer. The tuition is

two to four times higher than regular colleges. These schools graduate only

26%, do not offer counseling of any kind when a soldier has psychological

problems or just can't keep up with studies because they are not college

material. Basically the schools bill the govt and then cut the students

loose.

The schools lie about having inside information into corporations to help

place graduates. Frontline interviewed dozens of companies and to a man they

said they do not hire graduates from these schools because they have such

poor training bordering on incompetence.

Finally Congress is beginning to investigate some of the waste. But I'll

believe it when I see it.

Here is another thought.

When I was a child (70 yrs ago) the husband was the wage earner and the wife

stayed home to cook and mind the kids. Most families lived from paycheck to

paycheck and did not save much if anything. During World War II women had to

work in the factories because the men were at war. After the war, women

continued working to add to their families income and seek a better life.

Guess what happened? Because of the additional spending money prices rose to

absorb the difference. Also families had to hire care givers to help raise

the kids. Government kept borrowing more and more adding to the inflation.

So the net result that by the latter end of the 20th century both husband

and wives were working and living paycheck to paycheck. Nothing had changed

except that families were more stressed than every.

Now we are in the next generation. College kids are moving back in with

their parents. It now takes husbands, wives, and children living in the same

unit to survive. The stress level is higher than ever. Wages will never rise

high enough for young people now adays to afford their own homes in the next

ten years. As long as the government keeps borrowing amounts equal to our

GNP this problem will only get worse.

I just saw a blurb today on MSN that apartment rentals are rising fast due

to tight supply. There were too many houses build during the mortgage bubble

and not enough apartments. It will be tough on this new generation.
