Here's what I did at home for that.

I bought a refurbished Dell 2900 server and installed VMWare VSphere

Hypervisor (FREE).

It installs on the bare metal, it frees most resources for the virtual

machines.

I have 4 Windows 2008 virtual servers and a Centos virtual server installed.

It runs fast and trouble free.

The server hardware does help in this case.
