It would only take that long if you had a realllly slooowww
internet connection .... You might look at the manager - after
updates it often opens a console window to ask for parameters
for configuration of some packages - it could be sitting there,
waiting for your response....

You could also open another console window, and type
"ps -ef" and look for processes with <defunct> next to
them - that would tell you if it died during update ...
