I'm using the Gnome desktop, and when required to authenticate for
access to system configurations, I get a dialog that includes:
Authenticating as "root"
Does the dialog you get indicate which user is being asked to authenticate?
Also, switch to other terminals and try authenticating as root. To
switch to a character based terminal hit the
"Ctrl + Alt + F1" through "Ctrl + Alt + F6" keys to access any of your 6
character based terminals. To return to your X server GUI desktop
console hit "Ctrl + Alt + F7".
