I should have been more clear. The SOURCE HDD I leave Read-Only. The TARGET HDD, where I want to place the files coming from the failing (SOURCE) HDD, is the one I have to mount as Read-Write.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Can't you read files from a device when you have it mounted read-only? In my experience, that's a safer alternative. If the HDD is failing, writing to it is a bad idea.
