I have also had good results from Knoppix. But, be advised that if you need to recover files from a failing HDD, you must mount the target HDD as a Read-Write device before you can beginto peel files from the failing HDD.

I need to see if a MB or other hardware is failing on my son's WIN laptop. It will just die, no blue screen or no write to the log.
So i wanted to run linux from a cd/DVD boot to see if the machine could stay up .
What version is best? I think Ubuntu 7 or was it Knoppix?
TIA
