1. Compression: rather than copying 1 Gb of zeros to 1 Gb of backup disk, it compresses the image and splits it across (adjustable) 2 Gb blocks (for backup onto FAT32 external drives).
2. Ease of use: simple curses-driven (graphics in character mode) format with sensible defaults.
I've done this a couple of times, moving partitions onto replacement HDDs, or moving a physical volume into a VM, and it's quick and simple. And it's got a progress bar to entertain you, too.
Lessons learned: remember to back up the MBR separately, plan to allocate as much space for restoring (the entire partition size, not just the amount of space used) -- resizing is a separate task.
