I ran CygWin for a while. it works as advertised, but personally, if you are going to consider CygWin, also consider a 2nd box running Linux. keep a cheap 15" monitor hooked up to it but turned off most of the time. Use putty.exe to connect to it and use it. I did that for years.
patch.exe is in http://unxutils.sourceforge.net - that will be the easy way to solve the patch problem.
