I *always* set aside a separate partition for OS and apps which I then make a ghost image of. That way if I get problems I can always restore a known good copy of my apps and OS. It also means that all the data I need to backup is on a single drive and I don't have to go trawling through M$'s idea of where things should be stored when I do my backups. It can get quite interesting persuading some apps to store their data on D; though :-)
