I'm the guilty party of posting that. Along with Python/Dabo, REALbasic is of great interest for me for my non-VFP development efforts. I thought that other VFP developers might want to know of it's existence and perhaps take a look.
Real Software is making great strides with their 10 year old product. It seems to have really caught fire since 2004 however. Just like VFP, a large portion of REALbasic is written in ... REALbasic. Go figure!
It seems to me that a large number of RB programmers are from the Mac world. I believe that this is the case because there aren't that many RAD tools in the Mac world.
One thing to remember, is that RB is *not* a VB clone. It's fully object oriented, strongly typed, and the syntax is different in several (many?) places. It is similar to VB and they try to make it easy for VB developers to come across. Wouldn't you if you owned Real Software?
I'm starting a new company with my wife. Since we're almost completely a Linux based family, I needed an application that I could write for Linux so that my wife could run it. The two choices were Dabo and RB. I am *very* excited about Dabo and I think its future may even be brighter than RB. I decided to kick the tires of RB for this project however.
It's an application where most of the CRUD stuff is in forms hitting a MySQL server. The end product of this business will be a custom made book, printed and bound, custom for each client. For that, I'm going to use a VFP process of some kind, using LaTeX to end up with PDFs that get uploaded to LuLu.com for printing. I'm hoping to write an article for Foxpro Advisor and to release my VFP classes open source if it all works out.
Anyway, I'm getting off topic from RB. I've blogged some about RB if you care to look: http://cullytechnologies.com/ctblogdetail.php?key=150 http://cullytechnologies.com/ctblogdetail.php?key=153 http://cullytechnologies.com/ctblogdetail.php?key=154 http://cullytechnologies.com/ctblogdetail.php?key=155 http://cullytechnologies.com/ctblogdetail.php?key=156
Is RB as good as VFP? No. Is RB as stable as VFP? No. Does RB handle data as easily as VFP? No. Is RB free like Python/Dabo? No.
But just like Dabo, it's an awesome thing to be able to write applications for 99% of all desktops and servers, compared to only 90% as VFP can do. If that trips your trigger, then give RB a try. It's pretty good.
Disclaimer: I love VFP and will probably make most of my money off of VFP development/consulting for the next 10 years. Don't beat me up!!!
