I am not in disagreement that the Bluetooth earpieces can look rather unusual, or even silly. But I see a practical side to such a device for my purposes. You see, here in the state of New York (I live in the Northwest part of Upstate NY as opposed to NY city) we have some really brilliant politicians who felt it was far safer to require drivers to use their cell phones "hands free" as opposed to letting us simply use a cell phone while holding it up to one ear when driving. In my case I preferred to use a headset or earpiece whenever I happened to have one set up, but the convenience of simply answering and using a cell phone while driving was, in my opinion, far safer a situation than having a cell phone ring while driving, and having to fumble with the cell phone keys while trying to get it to work on speaker phone. And the use of a headset or earpiece vs holding the cell phone up to one ear is missing the entire point of trying to enhance overall driver safety, as conversing on a cell phone while driving is what distracts drivers - which is what is relatively dangerous for those folks who are not able to multi-task effectively <g>. It is a stupid law, but it is law that is enforced (and often violated by many drivers).
So, in order to minimize the chance of getting caught violating state law, or having to fumble with my phone trying to set it up for speakerphone use (a real pain in the arse with the Blackberry 7510), I usually leave a wired earpiece connected to my cell phone. The problem then is my elbow/arm often ends up catching the wiring, and the propensity for the wire to then get hooked on the armrest (SUV, of course) often ends up pulling the earpiece out of place. With a wireless Bluetooth unit all of that would go away. Well worth the price of replacing the cell phone with a blue tooth enabled device, and the purchase of a nice Bluetooth earpiece. So, what am I waiting for? The end of my cellular phone contract so I can get a replacement cell phone (likely the HP Treo) for dirt cheap as opposed to paying full price for a replacement phone. I may be lusting for a Bluetooth enabled phone, and certainly able to acquire such a device, but I am not willing to pay $500USD for such a device when it can be had for under $150USD by simply waiting a few more months.
