Just because one person violates a principle, even if they espouse that principle (especially so, actually), that behavior doesn't invalidate the principle, no matter how visible that person is. There are hypocrites and phonies in
all walks of life and of all belief systems. In this guy's case, I'd say it's a case of live by the sword, die by the sword vs. having your cake and eating it, too, which is obviously the way he approaches life.
