Below are some excerpts from an article on MSNBC about IBM's involvement
with open source, versus MS's opposite stand.

----------------

No company has as much of a stake in open source as IBM. Before Big Blue
started pumping billions into the Linux operating system ...

At the other extreme is Microsoft, which believes it is more
cost-effective and secure for a customer if one vendor supplies
proprietary software that is designed and supported by its own internal
developers. Open-source advocates, of course, argue that the company's
true motivation is to retain control over essential software, so it can
charge high fees.

Today some 600 IBM developers work on maintaining Linux.

If IBM's view of the world takes hold, the open-source model would mean
the end of software development as we now know it.
