You might take a look at Partimage which has most of the functionality of ghost. It's not as polished as ghost, but it is free. It is also very fast. My Linux partition is 80 gigs which includes a VMware XP Pro folder, so about 28 gigs of the 80 gigs is in used. I can create a disk image of the file in a little over 12 minutes, and then verify the image in about 10 minutes. I have a couple of 200 gig drives in my desktop system, (eg IDE 0 and IDE1), so I use IDE 1 strictly for backups. I can even backup other computers in the network to my desktop IDE 1, using the existing network and a couple of Partimage CDs to create a peer to peer connection.
Its easy to restore individual folders or files. All I need to do is restore a backup image to another partition, and then mount that partition under the original source Linux OS. Then I can fire up my file explorer and walk down the mount point to the folder and file needed, click on it and issue a copy, then paste it back to where it is needed.
Partimage may be available under Knoppix, which has a GUI, but I prefer the Partimage that is offered from http://www.partimage.org with its character based interface. Since I'm running Windows under VMware, I'm not sure have effective Partimage would be with that OS.
