Jason, most people get their information from TV, and the TV's primary mission is to keep people tuned in so they'll see more commercials and get more doses of political mind-shaping.
This approach precludes a rational approach to understanding and solving any given problem, including global warming.
Look at what's happening in New Orleans: TV's whole message is "Americans are going to pay big time for this one" - and not a word about the politicians and planners who didn't adequately reinforce the dikes in the first place - or the insurance companies who let them get away with it. People who work every day in that field knew that, sooner or later, this would happen.
