I can't help but see this as a good thing, and I disagree this is any kind of a change except perhaps in degree. As I subtitle my blog, "Competition breeds Innovation. Monopolies breed stagnation. " Linux competing for hearts and minds with Windows, Solaris, OS X, BeOS, Xenix, Multics and all comers only gives consumers more freedom of choice.
