! I think that's part of the point. The Bush Administration ! didn't make sure we had enough troops to keep an ! insurgency from forming. We had enough to invade, but ! not enough to effectively occupy.
Never would have gotten the Dems to approve such a massive build up. This criticism is so much arm-chair quarterbacking. Ever since Vietnam we have to be extra careful to use minimal force necessary, instead of overwhelming force. But the latter is politically distasteful, thanks in part to the hypocrites who today say we should have used overwhelming force.
(Not that the force we did use didn't overwhelm them.)
! ! News is news and the headlines for some of those articles ! was over the top compared to what they actually reported. ! ! I'm sure you don't think that if the press didn't cover the ! violence going on in Iraq it would somehow stop or do ! you?
No, but I'll put it this way.
If the press wasn't going out of its way to try to find a story about how we're the brutal oppressors, we might be able to smash the Sunni triangle, liquidate the Baathist leftovers, hand the keys to the natives, and get out. As it is we have to tip toe through the country like it was a rose garden so we don't look like brutes when we should be freely stomping out anything that moves in a hostile way against us.
The press with their adversarial role of anti-US muckraker make it hard for us to do the things required for victory, from simple things like extracting information out of the enemy to the big things "by whatever means necessary", like smashing them once and for all, decisively. Yes, this means blowing the hell out of the Sunni triangle brutally and thoroughly, maybe even putting a bullet in that Al Sadr shithead's skull too, just to show we're even handed about it.
If they'd focus on the cruelty and brutality of the enemy (which exceeds ours even in the worst portrayal of Abu Ghraib and Gitmo by so many orders of magnitude even considering the use of loud rap music that it's assinine to compare) instead of trying to prove Bush and Cheney and Rumsfeld mind-control our troops to perform acts of abuse, why, we might actually have a chance at defeating the enemy. As it is, the enemy knows they can count on the US media and Democrat party for easy PR against the Administration, and that's not exactly a formula for defeating the insurgency either.
