Yes, PostgreSQL has been criticized because of the need to do VACUUM,
but soon the vacuum will be performed performed transparently as a built
in part of the core product. I did a quick search of the web to try and
find out the current status of this feature, but will need to check back
with you about it.

Currently there is an auto-vacuum application that runs as a service,
and automatically vacuums a database based on statistics created on each
database. The name of the auto-vacuum service application is called
pg_auto vacuum, and is distributed with PostgreSQL. You could do a
search on the web to find out more about it.

PostgreSQL is an excellent database for the world wide web, and there
are many ISP that specialize in offering postgreSQL databases of their
customer, just like many ISP offer MySQL databases to their clients. I
love PostgreSQL. It's a great database and is much more open than
MySQL, and with a much better license to the open community.
