RH8 is a few years old now. Perhaps that's the problem.

Contrast that with my experience installing Ubuntu on my Vaio laptop.
It recognized my 3Com combo ethernet/modem card and connected
immediately. Then, just for fun, I removed the card (I didn't stop any
service or anything; just removed it) and popped in my wireless card.
Within 3 seconds I was connected! No tweaking necessary!
