What was done was to change the licensing so that handguns could no
longer be kept at home. I think you can still get a license for a
handgun but it must be kept at a gun club.

Obviously semi-automatic and other 'military' style weapons have been
outlawed for years. Licenses for hunting rifles and shotguns are still
available.
