Poor Mr Miller is not up on his history either. The Republican party
in those days was a liberal party with the exception of Goldwater, who
by todays standards would also be a liberal.

It wasn't until Nixon came up with the "Southern Strategy", refined by
Deavers/Reagan, Atwater/BushI, Rove/BushII and the old "Dixiecrats"
leaving the Democratic party that the Republicans became conservative
and in power.

What used to be the "solid south" for Democrats is now the "solid
south" for Republicans.

It all goes back to the Civil Rights movement, the "Great Society"
blunder, southerners still being pissed at having to be told what
to do by the "Guvment" and southerners being pissed that the
blacks and gays where being helped along.

Without those events the Republican party would still be the
minority marginal player they were for 50 years.
