Did you get an answer to this? I'm reading back over the last week's mail after being sick and don't see any replies.
The short answer is that you can open a terminal window, change to root in that terminal window, and then have at your file with your now rootlike powers and whatnot.
To change to root, issue the 'su' command or the 'su -' command. The first one simply turns you into root but leaves everything else 'as is' (such as the environment, your current directory, etc.) while the second one sets you up with roots environment and settings.
