In 1991 I thought my world was going to fall apart when, as a Senior Marketing Manager of a computer services company with a national presence, I was "invited to resign" with a 2 year salary severance check to accept if I went quietly. I guess I riled up the Exec Mgmt team one time too many with some my observations about how they were doing things that would hurt the company in the longer run, and they got tired of hearing it. I used that money to develop one of the projects I had taken to them, they let me run with it, and when I hit my objectives they killed off "because it may make our customers happy with our current product, and we want to sell them into the new hardware". Never mind the software was the same with both sets of hardware... <g> Idiots.
Knowing very little about programming, but having a concept that I believed would be well accepted, and was direly needed, I began to craft my programming and software solution development skills, using FPD/FPW (I was familiar with Dbase III+, but wanted to go to something a tad faster <g>), and ProComm Aspect (telecom app).
Within 2 years I had the beginning of an established client base, and was sailing along just fine within 3 years. Best thing that could have happened to me, also. Oh, the company that let me go with such a nice send-off?... They soon afterward retained my services to wrap up some projects, I billed tham at $135.00 per hour. Within 3 years they were in bankruptcy and were acquired by a competitor for asset value. None of the Executive Managers were kept on staff after a few months of transition. As for me, I am doing "just fine, here on cloud nine". I never looked back, except to maybe gloat a bit <g>...
The other year my younger sister exclaimed dismay when I had made a fairly major financial move, and asked what I would do if I were to lose my job! "I don't have a job. I have quite a few clients, all of whom send me license fee payments each month. If I lose a client I just go out and get another!" I don't think she understands to this day what I meant...
