They lost their jobs, just as they would lose their wallet if it was stolen, or lose their lives if struck by an airplane. I don't feel the phrase is a matter of political correctness, like "being made redundant" or "RIFfed." They were fired, laid off, terminated and/or forced to relocate when the parent company closed down this business.
They lost. I lost my job.
One of the best things that ever happened to me, btw. Hope yours turns out similarly.
