Always have.
Spammers, perhaps, but companies with "legitimate" email marketing campaigns send out HTML emails with links to images that call back to the mothership to confirm the mail has been opened, and links encoded individually for each email to match against the users. Years ago, when I was working for an online company, we looked into buying into one of these systems to contact likely prospects (QA people in the Fortune 5000) with promotions about our software. While it was supposedly one-time, opt-in, I was never comfortable with the idea.
