Alan,
I think one of the delusions many of us suffer from in choosing a hosting firm is selecting by price and features and forgetting that there's no free lunch when it comes to service.
If you want Mercedes service then you need to buy a Mercedes and be ready to pay the maintenance fees. If you choose a $99 hosting plan, you're going to have to live with the type of service that such a fee can realistically fund.
If you want great service, then there's always options such as MaximumASP at $160 - $200 month vs. $100 year via "LunaPage class" hosting firms.

I've worked on projects where a client has hosted via MaximumASP and I was blown away by the performance, reliability, and features. Sort of like driving in my neighbors new Mercedes S class.
However, given today's business climate and my simple website, I'd rather take my chances with LunarPages and save $2300/year vs. host with MaximumASP. (As insurance, I run my email through Fastmail.fm vs. LunarPages - "just in case")

I know I'm probably going to get a virtual slap for suggesting this.....
But do they have a backup you could pull the originals from and simply reinstall?
On a side note. If any company but a software related company did something like this, people would demand money back and compensation to fix the problem.
Where the hell did we miss that for software/computer related companies. This idea of "it's software...shit happens"..is really starting to get me pissed off.
Hope you get it all fixed up. The puppies are always great to look at........
