The main difference between the auto industry and the OS industry is one word: competition.
Using FUD and Office-application-standard file formats, MSoft has effectively negated the threat of competition...until Linux.
If there hadn't been competition from Japanese car manufacturers in the 70's and 80's, the "Big Four" would never have lifted a finger or spent a dime on improving reliability, gas mileage, and safety.
Sad that IBM was too busy shooting itself in the foot for OS2 to go anywhere, but like the concept of "democracy", Microsoft can't effectively fight Linux forever because Linux isn't one company that can be litigated to death or paid off. (That's why they enlisted SCO to try.)

You know, I think there are a lot of comparisons to be made with the early auto industry and computers/software. Time spans and other issues, of course, are different, but the greedy bastards running some of the companies have never changed. <s>
