We weren't able to obtain financing for an off-grid house the last time we checked, and that's why we are trying so hard to connect to the grid. I would have no problem with being off-grid if I were the only one making that decision.
You'd be surprised how little electrical power is actually necessary. We Americans are very spoiled.
It is more likely that we'll be able to obtain financing in a year or so for an off-grid home if we still aren't able to get grid power out here. The rules for financing changed when I took a salaried position. Things are looking good for getting connected lately, however, so you never know.
