Golly gee I must be.

I think its, shall we say, overstated.
At the end of the day, it'll be a close partisan election. Now, if > 55% of the voting public votes one way or the other, I'll confess openly and on this list, publicly, that I was totally clueless. (I don't profess to be clairvoyant.) There are more Democrats than Republicans, numerically speaking, and if the partisans can whip up that apparently large chunk of Democrats who secretly support Bush into an anti-Bush mood, they can tip the scales.
Short of this massive, bizarre display of trumped-up rage, I don't see them even coming close to making that happen. For all of there efforts to date, Kerry and Bush are still pretty even in the polls. Bush Sr. was 15 pts behind Dukakis at this point in the '88 election. We all know how that went for Dukakis.

I don't know how that anecdotal information translates to the world-at-large, but certainly it would be bad for Bush if the military went against him. I just don't see that happening, though.

I wouldn't declare this a fait accompi yet; I suspect the vast majority ( > 75% ) of armed service people, active and off duty, and veterans, will support Bush.
But like you say... if enough don't...
Contrary to all that crap about Bush being a dictator, a tyrant, an emperor, he's just an elected politician, and elections can go wrong and sometimes the wrong people do win (wrong being, as it were, a subjective valuation).
