Yeah-- I suck. But hardware today sux. Everything's getting cheaper and shoddier... :(

You'll need Gigabit cards and a gigabit switch if you want to achieve gigabit speeds. The good thing about it, is Gigabit ports usually switch down to 10/100 just as well, so you can just update the machines you need to go faster.
