Always good advice, but really needs to be balanced with the environment. If someone's just looking for a little boost from 100Mbps, and doesn't need all the features of a managed switch, a Gigabit "toy" switch from DLink might be OK-- particularly for a home-based network... I have never achieved anywhere close to gigabit performance with mine, but I've gotten a few hundred Mbps, which was enough for the software that was crunching the data...
