I used to know Steve Cassidy. We were both users of a conferencing system called Compulink (CiX) where he was registered as 'cassidys'; I was 'majikthise' for reasons we shan't go into ;o). Interesting bloke and always had an amusing tale to tell.
Other well known users of said conferencing system: Paddy Ashdown, Cherie Blair, Douglas Adams (RIP) and Terry Pratchett. Twas also the birthplace of "Team Waste".
Cheers Gary

Do any Ireland/UK members read PC Pro magazine? There's a column in it by a guy called Steve Cassidy who is a network consultant and troubleshooter and it usually makes for fascinating and enlightening reading. His latest column is about a 50-user network that he was called in to look at which should have been lightning fast but that slowed down for periods of ten minutes at a time for no apparent reason. It turned out that they were a design house and had many huge graphic files on big network drives. Every so often a few XP users would browse into these network folders containing hundreds of graphics, and the whole thing would grind to a halt as the XP machines built thumbnails and indexes and looked down into subfolders to cache things further. Also there was an old Novell box referred to in login scripts and shortcuts which he found disconnected from the network and in the back of a broom cupboard. So all the machines were spending tens of seconds trying to find the shares on it every time they booted.

A few weeks ago I started a discussion about our XP OS computers experiencing a ten minute delay when the user tried to run a exe on the server.
Only the XP computers behaved this way and it started after we installed SP2 on our Win2000 Server.
The files we were trying to open are in a shared folder called "Public".
We finally called Microsoft support ($245.00) and through troubleshooting, trial and error, and just plain dumb luck, we found that when we changed the share name to "Public2" the XP pc's would now open the applications normally (a few seconds, rather than ten minutes).
The MS tech support person had no idea why this would work, or why it didn't work in the first place.
We are an old Novel shop and the share name "Public" was a hold over from the old Novel days.
This seems extremely unusual and I'm open to any explanations anyone might have as to what's going on.
