You're right. We don't just buy the latest copy of XYZ software, upgrade it,
and then turn the production machine back on with our fingers crossed. We
make sure we test it thoroughly and then have a plan to put the old stuff
right back just in case something gets through the test.

Anyone with a brain that remembers more than 18 months into the past is
cautious. I can remember spending a month on a Fortran program that got
moved from one VAX running DCL to another running the same OS and same
version of Fortran twenty years ago. These days aren't much different.

Still, the shop I'm working in now is running XP and VFP8 on the development
machines. At present, though, the code gets recompiled and tested in VFP6
before being promoted to the production machines. The migration to VFP8 is
taking several months of testing to be sure it is working right. By the time
we move to VFP8, we'll be pretty sure of it.
