There is a difference between destroying its defensive capabilities and
destroying its WMD as was ordered by 17 UN resolutions.
But your post does show how far the left would go - defending Saddam for not
destroying his WMD

If Iraq had destroyed all of its defensive capability and, for example, Iran
had invaded them would the US have depployed troops to defend it?
You have to remember that we're dealing with real people with very real
strengths and weaknesses.
