Okay, now I get it. I was stuck on the idea that I really only wanted one python install on the system; in fact, I might have several and can distinguish between them by paths, or create aliases to do that for me. Thanks!

Fink is a great tool; it's allowed me to use my favorite editor (joe) in OS X. There is a GUI front end for it, too, named Fink Commander.
What Fink does is allow you to install standard Unix stuff that was developed for Linux using an apt-get type of updating. It stores all of its stuff in a folder named "/sw", so it doesn't overwrite any standard Mac stuff.
