Pete: I do not have the cable modem connected directly to any computer or switch I have a LinkSys (Cisco) wireless router between the cable modem and the network. These little $60 router wonders use NAT and so far in the log file I have not seen anything *unusual*. Also I have shut off DHCP so if someone did get in it would be at least 1 more step to log in. I imagine that somewhere in the router I could have set up something that the only boxes to get an IP would be the listed ones via the MAC address (but I'm not sure about this). On the wireless side I have restricted the use by loading only the MAC addresses with permission to use the network and have established a 128 bit encryption scheme using WEP to allow a connection. Did I forget anything? Any suggestions? Thanks for asking because most on a cable modem don't know about a firewall and are more clue less than I am about security. This past summer I upgraded our firewall at the the Devils to Checkpoint Next Generation and purchased a Nokia 350 appliance to administer the policies. The NT box is gone and all seems ok with the use of the Nokia hardened appliance. It would be nice to have a this at home (not!!!). I use the word Checkpoint to be synonymous when things are screwy, messed up or just plan cantankerous <g>. Regards,
Jack
