Hi Bill!

I was looking for the FoxServe thing and I didn't find it. Any idea where
it hangs out? Oh, wait, I think I found it:

<http://www.foxserv.net/documentation/out/Apache.html>

I have PHP, MySql and Apache on CD from the SAMS book as we speak. This
documentation suggests that FoxServe is something to install them. Is it
better than what I have? If I download FoxServe do I get it all at a lick,
or do I have to download all the pieces as well - Apache, MySQL, PHP,
Python, PERL, phpMYAdmin and MySQL -Front? Of course, there are a few that
I don't have in any case. At 26.4 this will take forever. The modem is 56
K, the cheap phone lines out here in the sticks are the problem.

This is the (CD) directory structure of what I have now:

Apache Apache 2.0.43
| +-----UNIX
| -----Windows
| +-----Binary
| -----Source
|
+-----Examples All the examples developed in
the book
|
+-----MySQL MySQL 4.0.4 Beta
| +-----UNIX
| | +-----binary
| | -----source
| |
| -----Windows
| +-----binary
| -----source
|
+-----PHP PHP 4.2.3
| +-----UNIX
| -----Windows
|
-----WinZip WinZip 8.1

DDL? ERWin? E-R tool? Good thing you included a glossary!

You are correct about my being more comfortable in FoxPro, problem is M$
harpooned the project by not letting us use Windows 95. Ken Levy said
something about maybe getting us a deal on Win 98, but the (donated)
hardware won't run Win 98. All the while the BSA was sending us letters
about compliance, etc., We didn't have anything hot running anyway, but the
harassment made me think about asking for permission in advance of our
deployment, permission which I had naively expected to be routinely
granted. I'd like to know who told the BSA about us, considering that it
was a lie. That is one person I would always keep one eye on.

We can't deploy the VFP 5 app (which was almost done, the pre-beta sort-of
worked!) unless and until we buy a Microsoft OS for every seat AND get
permission to use that license to validate the Win 95 install. Since no one
has an extra $40,000 (M$ OS with "charity" discount) to put in our pocket
for this, the whole thing has been languishing for a year. Even if we
bought Win XP for every box, it is still unclear if M$ would let us use Win
95 under the XP license anyway.

We could distribute the Fox application to those who already had Windows,
but since we couldn't use it on the main project, we stopped developing it.
Of course, once we finally re-write in cross platform, it will be a better app.

Regards,

Pete
