What is this data worth to the company? Would they feel it is a loss if they were to lose the entire database of information? What about being able to re-enter the data should it get lost? What would the cost of that be in the wages for all the temps they'd need to reenter this information?=20
Worst case scenario is that you lose everything. Best case scenario - well, without a backup, what would that be? You still have no data. You've lost something, and the integrity of the data is completely in question - is this piece of information correct or has the data corruption we experienced last week changed this value? Can your company afford that?=20
Now, let's see... A tape backup, tapes and the software to perform the backups. What could that cost, a few hundred dollars, perhaps a bit more? Yes, the ongoing cost of buying new tapes when the old one's are past their prime, but it's far, far less money than the inevitibility that some problem will cause a loss of data.=20
Oh, and here's one more: yes, you have a UPS. You have redundancy in your data stores (perhaps through RAID). But what if somebody accidentally or maliciously changes the data you've go online? How will you go about restoring the old data? What will that cost the company as the old data is recreated manually, instead of a 15 minute restore operation?=20
Just from the top of my head... I can't believe the management of some company's are soooo short-sighted when it comes to their data.=20

Our tape drive that we used to backup up with got fried about a month ago, and I do not think I have been able to convince my boss how important and dire this is. Our company's entire foundation is built on our name and sales databases. Could I get some responses on why it is important to backup, and hear some horror stories of not backing up? Thanks!
