I think it all depends how pissy the border guard is. I had more trouble getting back into the county, as I recall, when I flew from toronto.
Last time I drove, all I needed was a drivers license.
However
Bill can attest that they are having a pissing contest with the US and making it difficult to come across, depending on where the crossing is.
