I've done CSS for output in the past. IMO, it's very easy. Think of it like setting properties for a class. "Instances" refer to the CSS class they are and inherit/reflect those properties without you having to set the HTML formatting at the exact spots they're actually used.
I wondered if CSS would stand the test of time or fade away like so many other technologies.
