Weird. There are a couple of dedicated backup tools for Pegasus.
One is written by Corrin (my old employers) and can be set to use either PKZIP/PKUNZIP or WINZIP (via the command line interface).
Another one is written by WA Computing (Wendy Aucock) and you can download an evaluation version from her web site. This doesn't use the PKWare stuff.
Might be worth trying to see if it makes any difference.
