Oh, I get it. So the French had no interest in their own lucrative oil contracts because they're not as profitable as some other contracts (which were mostly held by the Russians)? Makes perfect sense.

I don't know who 'left' is but if you mean Turkey, they have thought of that. Are you aware of the threat of Turkish border incursions? You do know the Turks have long feared a Kurdish border state? Did you know that Iraq was occupied by Turkey before World War I (before they found oil there)? Do you know the Turks and the Kurds have a long history of animosity including a 20th century attempt by the Turks to annihilate the Kurds through genocide?
As to why you didn't think of that, I couldn't say.
