I am not so sure what you mean by the time it takes to do this. I don't think it takes any more time to do it this way than it does in the VFP form's visual dataenvironment. You only have to code it once and as Ed pointed out, it really belongs in the cursor definition.
What I found was that the prg files became very hard to manage. (That was before the Doc View window, I would feel differently now) But data environments have to be managed somehow. If you set them up separately from the form, modifications and maintenance are much, much easier. Considering what was available in VFP3 and 5, I think this was a very slick way to deal with the problem.
