Your app in fact MUST NOT be able produce corruption of VarChar. I still sure this was bug in 1.8.10.
You say it have work for you long time. But exists bugs that happens only on combination of VERY rare case. So they are hard to reproduce and catch. You could just enter some new string into VarChar which have raise this rare case.
