You don't; for reasons unknown to anyone Apple has decided that creator and type codes are the devils work and are doing everything they can to prevent their use. Everything is now dependent on the file extension. Yes, we're moving back to the days of DOS...
This means you should have NO files without an extension, as they can become unusable. (for instance, in 10.2 the finder now handles FTP downloads and I find it strips all files downloaded of their type/creator codes).
I really am going to miss resource forks and file/type creator codes :(
