as far as I see ALL BaseObject Methods of boReferences that do conversion in upper case now marked as INDEX BY WORDS.
John, if you make string/text field to be indexed by words, then it already can not be used for sorting. This is mentioned in docs.
Check if this is issue of your problem ?
