Actually, I put it in a thread, and still there was no screen
updating. And no, I don't get any system time during the indexing --
the menu clock is set to minutes, so I can't tell by that, but if I
have the Date and Time control panel open, the seconds stop until the
indexing is finished. Also, clicks in the menubar (e.g., on the time)
don't work until the indexing is done.
